USPS postmark delay warning

In many states, a payment is marked “on time” based on the USPS postmark. If the postmark shows a later date, the payment can be marked delinquent. This could lead to surprise late fees for people who mail their tax payment at the last minute.

Officials warn taxpayers NOT to wait until the deadline. “In other words, if you plan to pay your property taxes by mail, don’t wait until right before the deadline to put it in the mail”, as per the report by The Express.

How to avoid late property tax fees

Experts recommend mailing tax payments much earlier or paying online. “This could be a great option for people who are concerned that they are mailing their payment too close to the deadline and want to make sure that they are not going delinquent,” Schley said.

Another Wisconsin treasurer says online payments are cheap and safer. Treasurer Teri Jacobson explained that credit/debit cards have a 3% convenience fee, but E-checks cost only $1.50, “which comes out to about the same as postage for your payment and a return receipt.”

FAQs

Q1. Why could my property tax payment be marked late this year?

Because USPS now adds postmarks at sorting centers, your mail may get a later postmark and appear late even if you mailed it on time.

Q2. How can I avoid late fees on my property taxes?

Mail your payment much earlier or pay online to make sure it arrives and gets processed on time.
